Before & After Botox & Fillers

  • Remain upright for 4 hours after injection, do not lie down or bend over, this will help prevent BOTOX® from tracking into the orbit of your eye & causing a drooping eyelid. It takes approximately 2- 4 hours for BOTOX® to bind to the nerve.
  • Don't exercise heavily for 24 hours after BOTOX®; 3 days after Juvaderm/fillers.
  • Don't massage or manipulate the injection sites or perform activities that increase circulation to the areas injected, such as touching face, facials or face procedures, massaging, saunas, hot tubs, straining, or heavy lifting, for at least 6 hours after BOTOX® treatment. This will keep the Botox in the injected area and not elsewhere. After filler products wait 24 hours before rubbing or manipulating areas, 3 days for vigorous exercise, & Avoid intense heat or cold (sun bathing, saunas, hot tubs etc) for 2 weeks after fillers.
  • Do not sleep on the face for the first 24-48 hours as the filler is still malleable during this time.
  • Apraclonidine eye drops may be used as indicated immediately at any sign of a drooping eyelid to counteract that effect. You may want to sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights depending on swelling & bruising of filler or botox.
  • Do NOT receive IPL photofacial, laser treatments, microneedling, or microdermabrasion after BOTOX® or filler injections for at least 2 weeks. Ask your provider if you are not sure about the time frame of certain services. Regarding fillers especially, you must wait at least 6 months before radio-frequency treatments involving deep dermal layers of areas injected!
  • Avoid sun bathing for 1 week before & after injectable treatment.
  • Its recommended right after BOTOX® to periodically perform facial movements/expressions (such as smiling, squinting, frowning, & raising eyebrows etc.), in the areas injected. These movements help Botox to work its way into the muscle. Avoid significant movement after Juvaderm/filler.
  • Call the office immediately if you experience any problems. If you have signs of allergic reaction such as itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, dizziness or faint. Bleeding, discoloration, or severe pain.
Notify immediately and proceed to the ER if any problem is severe.
  • If you experience any adverse side effects that make it unsafe to drive, do not drive or operate machinery!! BOTOX® may cause loss of strength or general muscle weakness, vision problems, or dizziness within hours to weeks of taking BOTOX®. If this happens, do not drive a car, operate machinery, or do other dangerous activities.
  • Bruising in the area injected is normal and often expected, especially if treated around the eyes. Bruising can last up to several weeks. Using/taking Arnica may help diminish bruising, however you should wait at least 2 days before taking.
  • If your upper lip was treated with BOTOX® you may not be able to drink through a straw, whistle, or enunciate some words for approximately 2 weeks.
  • Although rare, infection in the injected area is possible. Signs of infection may include redness and tenderness in the infected area and fever. Should you develop an infection, antibiotics may be necessary. Please contact us should you have any concerns.
  • Lumping at injection sites may appear and are common, they usually subside in a few days for BOTOX®, Juvaderm lumps typically dissipate over the next several months. These lumps may be gently massaged if your clinician has instructed you to do so. Do NOT Massage BOTOX® Persistent lumps can be smoothed out with a tiny superficial injection of a smoothing agent that dissolves the filler.
  • Pain & swelling are normal. Continue to ice or cool compresses without pressing on the injected areas for the first 48 hours as recommended by your practitioner.
  • You may take Tylenol for any headaches or discomfort as long as you do not have any allergies to Tylenol.
  • Don't take Ibuprofen, aspirin, vitamin E, motrin, aleve, NSAIDS, anti-inflammatories, or blood thinners for 2 weeks after any injections.
  • Do not take any muscle relaxants or anticholinergic (medicated eye drops) after BOTOX® for 2 weeks as it may potentiate the effects. If you are on any other medications please ask the provider when you should resume.
  • Avoid herbal supplements such as Ginko Biloba, Garlic, Green Tea, Flax Oil, Cod Liver Oil/Fish oil, Vitamins A and E, essential fatty acids/Omega’s, ginseng, & St. John’s Wort or anti-inflammatories of any kind for 2 weeks following treatment to limit bleeding/bruising.
  • Tell your doctors you received BOTOX® before starting any NEW medication; do not take antibiotics without consulting a doctor first.
  • Do not drink alcohol for a few days after treatment.
  • These treatment is not recommended if you have an important event within 2 weeks of injection due to potential for bruising, swelling, or undesired effect that may need correction.
  • Avoid irritating skin products for 48 hours following injections to avoid inflammation & infections. Do not apply any retin-A, acne, glycolic acid, vit C, hydroquinone, anti-aging creams, or medicated creams to face at least 2 days after receiving injections.
  • Make-up may be applied gently before leaving the office, remember to wipe up and away from your eyes or brows. However, to avoid infections or irritations it’s recommended to wait 24 hours before applying makeup!
  • It may take up to 14 days for BOTOX® to take the full effect. If the desired result is not seen after 2 weeks of your treatment you may need additional Botox, please let us know. We can correct or tweak any treatment.
  • A follow-up visit at 10 days to 2 weeks is suggested to assess results for subsequent treatments, particularly if you are a first time client.
  • Re-treatment with BOTOX® is typically needed between 3-6 months. Call and schedule your next appointment once you see the muscles beginning to gain movement again. Juvaderm/filler touch ups may be performed if needed in 2 weeks, however it is recommended to wait 6-8 weeks.
  • Regular injections usually yield a longer lasting BOTOX® result. However, over time the effects of Botox may decrease as you build antibodies to the Botulinum toxin.
